Sleek Headphones

Headphones are fast becoming a fashion statement as they are listening devices. One good thing about this new craze is that it has inspired headphones makers to think of how their headphones look on the outside, as well as the sound quality on the inside. Perhaps taking design inspiration from the Apple products they are frequently plugged into, the design is now part of the experience.

These are some of the sleekest and most stylish headphones available on the market. From city-industrial to luxury Audi, the headphones on this list are definite head turners. But don’t worry, we also only focused on the headphones that actually sound good as well as looking good. You will also notice that these headphones are designed to work with mobile devices, which makes sense. If you’re going to make your headphones look awesome, you definitely want your customers to be able to show them off.

The headphones on this list are that rare combination of style and superior sound quality. They are all ranked on their sound quality first, as well as important factors like style and functionality.

1. Scosche Bluetooth Headphones

sleek headphones

What We Like:
The glossy black and chrome headphones offer a sophisticated yet stylish look to headphones. The style reminds me of an Audi R8. Car audio maker Scosche’s first entry into wireless headphones has been making a huge splash, mainly because of the reference grade 40mm drivers delivering crisp, clear sound. The headphones are also fully integrated with all iphones, ipods and even Samsung Galaxy smartphones. The rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery is convenient and a step up from AA batteries, and at $199 are cheaper than almost every other set of bluetooth headphones on the market.
Needs Improvement:
The sleek look of the headphones is amazing out of the box, but you’ll need to wipe away fingerprint smudges to keep it looking pristine. That’s the price of sleek headphones.
Overall:
If you’re looking for bluetooth headphones for watching movies, commuting or for the gym, these are the best sounding headphones under $500, nevermind the $199 that these headphones cost. Hopefully Scosche doesn’t figure this out and start raising the price.

2. Sol Republic HD Tracks

sleek headphones - sol republic tracks

The headphones made popular at the London Olympics aren’t just a fashion accessory for Olympic swimmers. Sol Republic is actually very adept at making great sounding headphones and hopefully their reputation for sound quality grows through word of mouth. That being said, they have great customization options where you can choose your the type of head band, ear cups and cables you want for your headphones. I prefer the basic black all around, but there are countless combinations possible with these headphones.
What We Like:
They are small, compact, and deliver great sound quality. The build quality of these headphones are much better than what you’d expect, as they would make excellent gym headphones.
Needs Improvement:
Depending on the type of HD Tracks headphones you get, the baseline Sol Republic headphones are a bit too dependent on bass. That’s what most people seem to want in headphones like these. Sol Republic wants you to upgrade for better sound quality, with their best sounding headphones almost $100 more than their baseline.
Overall:
Sol Republic deserves more credit for sound engineering than they are currently getting. The Tracks HD are definitely a great ‘Beats alternative’ for gym headphones.

3. Street by 50 Headphones from SMS Audio

Street by 50 - sleek headphones

What We Like:
Powerful bass that manages to hit hard without completely overwhelming the headphones. Street by 50 headphones fit comfortably around the ears. They sound great with portable devices and are great headphones for going to the gym.
Needs Improvement:
While the bass is handled better than Beats, the emphasis on the low end is far too obvious. The headphones can sound artificial when it comes to the mids and highs. Classical music tends to sound flat, as does female vocals.
Overall:
Any music that benefits from strong bass are best served on these headphones. They look great and are comfortable to wear.

4. V-Moda Crossfade M-80 Headphones

sleek headphones - vmoda crossfade m-80 headphones

What We Like:
While not specifically ‘sleek’ in nature, the M-80’s are fashionable headphones with their retro industrial design. They’ve also inspired a whole new class of ‘industrial chic’ headphones (see the Sennheiser Momentum headphones below) and top it off: they are amazing sounding headphones.
They are also military tested (seriously) for durability.
Needs Improvement:
The 3 button cable is only compatible with iOS. The headphones could stand to be tighter on the head.

Overall:
These headphones will become your everyday headphones if you’re not careful. The sound great with everything I tried, and they are built to withstand the daily wear and tear of an active person. If they made a bluetooth version these would be my gym headphones as well.

5. Sennheiser Momentum Headphones

sennheiser momentum headphones

What We Like:
Signature Sennheiser sound on mobile-friendly headphones. Sennheiser made these headphones more sensitive and responsive to mobile devices, meaning you can have great sounding headphones during your morning commute without need amps or any other audiophile equipment.
Needs Improvement:
The large headphones come with a neat travel case, but a folding design would have gone a long way towards making these headphones a little more commuter friendly. They are also quite pricey, at $349.99.
Overall:
While jumping on the ‘industrial design’ bandwagon seems a little silly, the headphones sound great while still managing to pull of a ‘steampunk headphones’ look.

Bowers and Wilkins P5 Mobile Headphones

sleek headphones bowers wilkins p5

What We Like:
When it comes to pure sound quality, the P5 headphones are the best sounding headphones on this list (Scosche is a close second). Distinctive rectangular pads give the P5 a look that will stand out from the crowd. The high quality sealed leather headband and ear cups also scream ‘luxury’. The P5 are designed to be mobile-friendly and indeed are some of the best sound quality headphones you could plug in to your mobile device.

Needs Improvement:

For being ‘mobile headphones’, there is no real compact way to travel with them.
Overall:

While most of these headphones have bass-heavy music (ex. dubstep) in mind, these are the headphones you want to have if you’re listening to live music, watching movies or classical music.
